John Anderson

John Anderson

Clarinetist John Anderson has taught at the university level for over 40 years. His former students are currently teaching clarinetists from elementary to college levels in the United States, Taiwan and Korea. He has written a method specifically designed for college music education students studying clarinet as a secondary instrument, Concepts for the Clarinet Teacher, and a clarinet foundation study, Clarinet Essentials. He was Professor of Clarinet at the University of Minnesota from 1976-2009 and is now actively editing clarinet methods and solos and woodwind chamber music for Jeanne, Inc.

In addition to performing the standard repertoire for clarinet from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, he has established an international reputation in contemporary clarinet performance. He has premiered works written specifically for him involving solo clarinet and clarinet with narrator, tape recorder, synthesizer, interactive computer, and other sound manipulation devices. He has performed throughout the United States and in Canada, Brazil, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, China and Taiwan, including solo and chamber music recitals at the International Clarinet Society and College Music Society Conferences, and the International Conference of Electronic Arts.

He is a member of the chamber ensemble Fiati and has recorded four compact discs with this ensemble. The first CD, Masterworks for Reed Trio was recorded in 1996 and includes compositions by Jean Francaix, Bohuslav Martinu, Heitor Villa-Lobos and a quartet for reed trio and piano by Florent Schmitt. Blend, released in 2001, features chamber works for oboe, clarinet and strings or piano, including the first recordings of Judith Lang Zaimont's . . . 3: 4, 5 . . . for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, and bass and Lloyd Ultan's Curved Mirrors for oboe, clarinet and piano. Deck the Hall: A Holiday Celebration with Fiati, released in September 2002, features the traditional woodwind quintet, but with novel and creative instrumental arrangements of Christmas holiday favorites by Noel Scott Stevens. Impressions, was released in 2005 and features trios for oboe, clarinet and piano by Edouard Destenay, Margaret Griebling-Haigh, Gabriel Marie, Andre Previn, and Randall Davidson. A Portrait of Brazil, was released in 2010 and features compositions by Joao Guilherme Ripper.
