Reed Making/Adjusting
Jeanné Gouging Machines
The gouge is probably the least understood aspect of oboe reed making. While the shape controls pitch placement, the gouge affects the overall stability of the reed as well as its response, timbre, dynamic flexibility and tip opening. The Jeanné oboe gouging machine is designed for the oboist who wants to have complete control over his or her reeds, with the ability to personalize the gouge in order to achieve the desired qualities of timbre, response, pitch stability and tip opening. We have created a manual with full-color images and detailed explanations of each aspect of the assembly and setup of our gouging machine including sharpening the blade.
This manual is for reference only and any adjustments to a gouging machine should not be undertaken without a thorough understanding of the machine parts and their relationship to the gouge.
