This new edition of the Schumann "Fantasy Pieces" or
"Fantasiestucke" was originally composed for clarinet
and piano in 1849. The solo clarinet part has been
adapted for bassoon by John Anderson for the Jeanne
Master Class Series. In addition to the bassoon and
piano parts, this edition also includes historical
information and extensive performance suggestions. A
copy of the original
manuscript and the 1885 Breitkopf edition, edited by
Clara Schumann, have been the main references. Both
clarinet and cello parts are published with the
Breitkopf edition. Our adaption of bassoon as the solo
instrument has used the clarinet articulations rather
than those found in the cello edition since the slight
differences in the cello edition are mostly due to
bowing and unrelated to wind instruments. However,
ossia measures are printed in the bassoon part
to show the cello measures where more significant
differences exist. Which options to use remains with
the bassoon soloist.
There are few serious technical problems for the
bassoonist. The challenge is to make the music into a
"dialogue" between the bassoon and piano. These pieces
are not a "solo with accompaniment" but pure chamber
music between two equal partners. Total duration
approximately 10.5 minutes.
