Chunyang Ping's Suite for Bassoon Trio has three movements. The first movement titled, “Guessing” is inspired by Yunnan folk songs. The composition leverages the unique performance attributes of the bassoon to depict the lively and cheerful lives of children. The inspiration behind the composition of the second movement “Tinkling Heavy Rain” originates from the poem “Bells Ringing in the Rain” by the Song Dynasty poet Liu Yong. The music employs the bassoon’s lingering and rich tone, portraying scenes of lovers parting, inseparable yet miserable. The bassoon melodies, expressed through three voices, are vivid and fluctuating, graceful and composed, blending scenes with profound emotions. “Daomadan”, the third movement of the Suite, adopts a rondo style. The introduction incorporates elements from the Sichuan Opera drum score “chaotic split talent.” Both the theme and inserts sculpt a character embodying both strength and gentleness, akin to the essence of “Dao Ma Dan Jiao.” In Sichuan opera, Daoma Dan assumes the role of one of the “Dan” characters, representing various female personas of different ages and backgrounds. Daoma Dan specializes in portraying heroic women, proficient not only in swordsmanship and equestrian skills but also adorned with the grace and tenderness emblematic of classical Chinese femininity.
