Event Horizon is a one-movement work with many different
tempi. It is structured in four sections: slow and
mysterious; fast; lyrical; and a final jazz-based section
using multiphonics to expand the coloristic range of the
quartet. The title "Event Horizon" refers to the
astronomical description of black holes in deep space:
black holes are of an infinite density emitting no light
into the universe (yet we have been able to determine
their existence). This work describes the action of
matter disappearing or being absorbed into a black hole.
Each of the four sections is absorbed into the "event
horizon" or black hole, symbolized musically by a unison
"d" which begins the piece and comes back in different
guises and colorations between each of the sections.
Event Horizon was commissioned by the Donne in Musica
Festival, Fiuggi, Italy, and was premiered in Italy in
September 1998. Colorful work for saxophones; duration
approx. 6:30.
