Continue ShoppingPatricia Morehead, composer and oboist, is the Founder and a member of CUBE. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, she has concertized extensively in Brazil, Canada, Europe and the USA, and has had over thirty works written especially for her. She made her Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1977. As a composer she has been commissioned by, among others, the American String Teachers Association, the Exsultate Trio, Mary Stolper, American Women Composers Midwest, Suzanne Summerville, and the International Conference “womenALASKAmusic.” She was chosen by Ursula Oppens and Aki Takahashi to write The Handmaid’s Tale, a work for two pianos, which was premiered in the spring of 1998. She was commissioned by the Donne in Musica Festival, Fiuggi, Italy, to write a new saxophone quartet, Event Horizon, which was premiered in Italy in September 1998. Her Y 2 Klarinets for two B-flat clarinets was commissioned by Richard Nunemaker of the Houston Symphony and was premiered in February 1999 by Mr. Nunemaker and Christie Miller. In 1999 she wrote a new solo harpsichord work, Fantasy Variations, for international harpsichord virtuoso Jory Vinikour.
Orpheus Revisited for oboe, bassoon, and piano was commissioned by Arbitrio for performance at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and her most recent work, Three Icons of the Feminine Divine, was premiered at the IDRS Conference in Birmingham, England in 2009. Disquieted Souls for English horn and chamber ensemble was commissioned and premiered by Ms. Morehead with North/South Consonance in New York in Spring 2009 and was performed and recorded in Chicago in June 2010 by CUBE with Carolyn Hove, English horn soloist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Parma will be releasing Ms. Morehead’s first CD of entirely her own music in September 2011 including the performance by Carolyn Hove of Disquieted Souls with CUBE Contemporary Chamber Ensemble.
Ms. Morehead has studied with Ralph Shapey, John Eaton and Shulamit Ran and Dr. Samuel Dolin. Alex Klein, principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is a former oboe and chamber music student of Patricia Morehead at the International Gramado Festival, Brazil. She has served on the faculty of Roosevelt University in composition, theory and oboe, and is currently professor of composition and music history at Columbia College. Patricia is the leader of the Composers Forum at the Merit School of Music, and teaches composition online in Vermont (VTMIDI.org).
