Xiangping Zou, born in 1951, is a senior professor in the Composition faculty of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. The Yalong River is a tributary of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China. It originates
from the southern foothills of Bayanhara and winds through the Alpine canyons and grassy pastures in Western Sichuan. The rivers and lakes mirror the unique custom and scenery of the Tibetan residential areas.
Although the entire composition is divided into three movements, the whole is actually like a river with upstream, midstream and downstream. It's like a life song which may be slow, stable and rushing. The movement
subtitles are "I. The river mirrors the dawn," "II. The prayer flags in the wind," and "III. Tibetan folk dance in the river night."
The solo was premiered at Lhotka Concert Hall of the Zagreb Conservatory by Zeyu Feng, a teacher at the Sias International College of Zhengzhou University, during the 18th World Saxophone Congress (July 13, 2018). The
saxophone range extends into the altissimo and there are some microtones and multiphonics. The total duration is approximately 16.5 minutes.
