Robert Stephenson was principal oboe of the Utah Symphony for 41 years prior to his retirement in 2021. As an introduction to the music, Stephenson writes "For many young people, or at least 'young at heart', the 'Alphabet Haiku' may be an introduction to the alphabet, poetry or even 'classical' music itself. It combines words, music and a little bit of theater into a 16-minute piece. The music was composed in the summer and fall of 2023. It incorporates a variety of themes and musical styles and hints back to our early learning of letters and the haiku form. It is the collaboration we can enjoy between story and music, an experience shared, an opportunity fulfilled. It is the palindrome 5-7-5. "
