Sky Curtains was composed in 1987. The composition
draws its title from the polar Auroras - Borealis
(Northern Lights) and Australis (Southern Lights) -
which display ever-changing patterns of light and
colour, sometimes muted, often spectacular. Just as
Auroras' visual patterns come together, break apart,
and reform in constant succession, so the sections of
Sky Curtains provide an ever-changing display of musical
colour and pattern. The work is scored for flute,
clarinet, bassoon, viola, and cello in numerous
combinations. The composer continually plays each set of
colours against the others, invoking solo, blended, or
unblended sonorities in moment-by-moment shifts. The 2
movements have a duration of 9:12 (Borealis) and 7:55
(Australis). Score and parts are included in the set.
