Three movements to this quintet for oboe, clarinet,
violin, viola, and bass: Blend, The Mad Dance,
and Elegy. The unusual instrumentation for this
quintet is due to its commission circumstance as a
companion piece to Prokofiev's op. 39 of the same
instrumentation. Since these five instruments normally
come together only as parts of a larger, conducted
ensemble, the work's musical issues were suggested
directly by the logistics of its instrumentation: How
to create blend from an inherently un-blended
collection of timbres, and how to enable a short-hand
"orchestra" to play together, in nuanced fashion,
without a conductor. . . . 3: 4, 5 . . . was
commissioned by Jeanne, Inc. and is recorded by Fiati.
The set includes the performance parts plus one study
score.
