According to the official U.S. Marine website, John
Philip Sousa (1854-1932) composed the 'Washington Post'
march in 1889 to promote an essay contest sponsored by
the newspaper of that name. It became the most popular
tune in America and Europe and was adapted and became
associated with the new dance craze of the era, the
two-step. The title 'March King'was given by a British
journalist who remarked that since Johann Strauss was
called the 'waltz king', Sousa deserved the march
title.
This music has been arranged for clarinet choir by James
Mack. It is scored for E-flat soprano clarinet, B-flat
clarinets 1-3, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and
contrabass clarinet. Alternate (optional) parts for this
clarinet choir arrangement have been included for Alto
Clarinet (Clarinet 4 or Basset Horn), and E-flat
contra-alto clarinet in place of the B-flat contrabass
clarinet.
