Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921), as he approached the end of his life,
composed sonatas for oboe, for bassoon, and for clarinet. Although
written in the twentieth century, these works are all "romantic" in style.
The clarinet sonata has 4 movements with moderate technical demands.
It remains a favorite after nearly 100 years with both clarinetists and
audiences.
