The music for Rose's 40 Studies was originally composed
for the violin by Dancla, Fiorillo, Kreutzer, Mazas, Ries,
and others. While maintaining the basic melodic structure
by these composers, Rose transposed etudes to different
keys and adjusted octaves to include the lower notes of
the clarinet. Additionally, Rose changed some of the
original articulation and technical requirements to avoid
idiomatic string techniques. Although not originally for
the clarinet, these etudes have become a major staple in
the clarinet pedagogy. This new edition, edited by John
Anderson, offers several "suggestions" for
interpretation and practice of these etudes.
