William E. Stafford (1914 to 1993) wrote a short poem, just 26 days before he died, entitled "The Way It Is". The poem is reflective, but not sentimental, and the words are the inspiration for Paul Richards' 'Thread'for alto saxophone and cello.
The work was written in 2019 for the Helton-Thomas Saxophone-Cello Duo. It is meant to be a companion piece to Paul Richards' "Jigsaw", for the same instrumentation (JP4091). Duration is approximately 7 minutes. Score and parts are included in the set.
Both "Jigsaw" and "Thread" have been recorded by the Helton-Thomas Saxophone-Cello Duo.
