Mozart's Quintet in A Major, K. 581, for Clarinet and String Quartet, is one of the most well-known and treasured works for clarinet. It was composed in 1789 for Anton Stadler, clarinetist of the Imperial Court Orchestra in Vienna, and is often referred to as "Stadler's Quintet."
The probable premiere was with Anton Stadler at the Royal-Imperial National Theatre in Vienna on December 22, 1789. This edition is edited for alto saxophone and string quartet by Eugene Rousseau. Rousseau writes, "The first substantive work written for the saxophone, Concertina da Camera by Jacques Ibert, was written in 1935, nearly 100 years after its invention. Since that time, an enormous repertory has been accruing." But missing from the repertoire are works by earlier masters. "Given the great lyricism of the saxophone and the compass of notes it shares with the clarinet," he says, "I find it a natural choice to use in the music of Mozart."
The original A Major key is maintained which requires some altissimo playing for the saxophonist. Rousseau has provided fingering suggestions for these notes. Rousseau recorded this quintet along with the Brahms Quintet with the Budapest Quartet. This recording is available from Jeanne, Inc.
