Milde was born in Prague in 1849, and started his
bassoon studies there at age 12. He went on to study
theory, composition, piano and organ at the local
conservatory, after which he played for two years in the
Linz (Austria) opera house. He returned to Prague to
become principal bassoon in several symphony orchestras,
and was the teacher of bassoon at the Prague
Conservatory from 1885 to 1894, retiring for health
reasons. He died in 1913. His 50 Concert Studies
is a major set of etudes for
the bassoonist. Only volume 1 is currently available.
This new edition has been edited by
Charles Ullery, former principal bassoon with the St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra.
