This set of variations is based on the first 16 bars of
what is commonly regarded as a folk song but was
actually composed by Thomas S. Allen in 1905 and
published in 1915. It memorializes the years from 1825
to 1880 when mule-drawn barges traversed the waterway
which extended 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo, New
York.
This music has been arranged for clarinet choir by James
Mack. It is scored for E-flat clarinet, B-flat
clarinets 1-3, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and
contrabass clarinet. Alternate (optional) parts for this
clarinet choir arrangement have been included for Alto
Clarinet (Clarinet 4 or Basset Horn), and E-flat
contra-alto clarinet in place of the B-flat contrabass
clarinet. Duration approx. 3 minutes
