Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) composed 25 Caprices
and Sonata (atonal) in 1929. The composer writes
that these short studies were intended to go beyond
'showy technique. 'He hoped to expand the saxophone
technique and musical expression' above the limited
requirements of a jazz-band.' The Caprices
present a study in each of the major and minor
keys, followed by the atonal Sonata.
There are 4 movements in the atonal Sonata containing
challenging technique and musicianship. This current
Jeanne publication has been edited by John
Anderson. Accidentals for selected notes have been
changed from the original to match intervals found in a
similar melodic pattern for a theme or motive. In
addition, measures with incorrect rhythms have been
adjusted.
This edition has separated the Caprices and the atonal
Sonata into two separate publications.
