Swan Hennessy was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1866,
the son of an Irish-American immigrant. He studied music
in Germany and lived most of his life in Paris, where he
died in 1929. Many of his compositions are based on
Irish folk melodies such as his Petit trio celtique for
violin, viola and cello, and his Sonata in Irish Style
for violin and piano. The same Irish influence is
obvious in his Trio, op. 54 for 2 clarinets and bassoon
in both the melodic material throughout the work and the
rhythms and harmonies of an Irish gig in the last
movement. The trio was composed in 1921 and dedicated to
fellow composer, Paul Ladmirault.
