In 1910 Debussy wrote two pieces for clarinet and piano
that were to be used for the Paris Conservatory
concours (examinations) that year. The Premiere
Rhapsodie was used for the performance degree concert
piece and the Petite Piece as a test in sight reading.
This is not to imply that this short solo is easy. The
delicate, dynamic nuances as well as technical
difficulties at the register break and intonation
problems in the throat register can make this work a
challenge. The dotted rhythms must be exact, yet as
smooth and legato as possible. Duration just slightly
over 1 minute.
