Winter Waltz was written in the middle of an Ohio winter
when snow, ice, and cold temperatures made everything seem
so bleak. To counter the dreariness of the winter the
composer was experiencing, she wanted to write a piece
with an upbeat and playful rhythmic structure. To this
effect, the piece features a waltz meter with a great deal
of syncopation in both the piano and saxophone parts.
The piece as a whole uses a traditional formal design of
rounded binary.
