Robert Schumann's work in 1849 resulted in several
important works for wind players. Fantasiestucke, op. 73
for clarinet and piano, as well as Adagio and Allegro,
op. 70 for horn and piano were both written within a
single week in February. On December 7, 11 and 12, he
completed Drei Romanzen, op. 94 for oboe and piano,
reportedly, as a Christmas present for his wife, Clara.
The manuscript presented to Robert Schumann's wife has
been lost. However, Clara Schumann edited the complete
works of her husband, which were published by Breitkopf
& Hartel, starting in 1878. Our current edition, edited
by Valarie Anderson, is based on Clara Schumann's
edition with only a few minor changes in articulations,
made for consistency.
