Barret's Complete Method for Oboe was first published in 1850. 40 Progressive Melodies from the Complete Method is frequently used as phrasing studies. For the current edition, edited by Valarie Anderson, the bass line has been transposed to the treble clef to facilitate the playing of these studies in lessons, allowing the student to hear the underlying harmonies. Adjustments have been made for voice leading and to fit the range of the oboe, but the harmonies remain the same as the original. Obvious note and articulation errors have been corrected. Some missing dynamics and articulations have been added, but in so doing, striving to maintain the intent of the composer. Barret's 40 Progressive Melodies is offered as a separate publication for those not wanting the Complete Method.
