Sebastian Huydts wrote three Sonatas for Viola and Piano in
Barcelona between June and December of 2010 as a triptych
intended to instruct, delight and entice young and aspiring
performers, while pleasing the connoisseurs. In style,
spirit and technique the works are varied but concise. The
playing techniques take advantage of the physical
properties of both instruments and are at an accessible
level; the works' duration ranges between 9 and 16 minutes.
All three sonatas feature small playful movements, which
follow one another without interruption. The opening
motive in every Sonata forms the foundation for the
entire work; all succeeding development is derived from
it. Tonality aside, there is a strong thematic
correlation between the 1st and 3rd Sonata. In contrast,
the 2nd Sonata is leaner, and plays textures reminiscent
of Haydn.
Sonata No. 1 has one, 12-minute movement containing
several different sections and tempi.
