American folksongs are both native and foreign-born. Like pizza, jazz and football, we Americans have at times borrowed ideas and made them our own. We both adopt and adapt. Robert Stephenson has composed two woodwind quartets based on “American” folksongs. Quartet No. 1 features an African-American spiritual, a Scottish-American sailor’s song, Irish-American and all-American love songs and lullabies with roots in England and Africa.
Quartet No. 1 has three movements: (1) "Sweet Betsy and All the Pretty Little Horses," (2) "The Riddle and Swing Low," and (3) Four Fish and Peter Grey." The quartet is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in A/B-flat, and bassoon. Score and individual parts are included. Total duration: approximately 10 minutes.
