Faure's exquisite Fantaisie is one of the jewels in chamber music for which we are indebted to his time at the Paris Conservatoire. The flute professor there, Paul Taffanel,
had asked his colleague for a virtuoso examination piece of a brief nature. Faure presented him with the manuscript in 1898, for use in the same year's examination. Taffanel
was given permission by the composer 'to modify unplayable passages'before using it in the exam, which Faure was pleased with, and thanked him for. While we do not know what
and how much Taffanel might have changed, as the autographed score no longer exists, the revision result in a brilliant recital piece. The version offered here, edited by
Stephen Page, serves as an exciting adaptation for soprano saxophone, for with the music is a natural fit, utilizing the full range of the instrument, as well as showcasing
the sensitivity and virtuosity of the performer.
