Brahm's Quintet op. 115, for Clarinet and String Quartet, is one of the most well-known and treasured works for clarinet. n the twilight of his career. Though there are pages in the score emitting a sense of joy, one can certainly hear in its unfolding a sadness, a sense of regret that he believed his years of creativity were coming to an end.

This edition is edited for alto saxophone and string quartet by Eugene Rousseau. Rousseau writes, "The first substantive work written for the saxophone, Concertina da Camera by Jacques Ibert, was written in 1935, nearly 100 years after its invention. Since that time, an enormous repertory has been accruing." But missing from the saxophone repertoire are works by earlier masters, and that gap led Rousseau to adapt and then record two masterpieces, the Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets. 'Given the great lyricism of the saxophone and the compass of notes it shares with the clarinet,'he says, 'I find it a natural choice to use in the music of both these giants of composition.'

The original key is maintained which requires some altissimo playing for the saxophonist. Rousseau has provided fingering suggestions for these notes. Rousseau recorded this quintet along with the Mozart Quintet with the Budapest Quartet. This recording is available from Jeanne, Inc.
