Carl Nielsen, born to a poor house painter, came to be
one of Denmark's greatest composers, taking his
inspiration from the folksongs, dances, legends and
landscapes of his homeland. An early work, the Fantasy
Pieces for oboe and piano, opus 2, was completed in 1890
and received the first public performance in 1891.
Nielsen described the pieces saying: "The first slow
piece gives the oboe the opportunity to sing out its
notes quite as beautifully as this instrument can. The
second is more humorous, roguish, with an undertone of
Nordic nature and forest rustlings in the moonlight."
