Barret's Complete Method for Oboe was first published in 1850.The Four Sonatas is Part 2 in the Complete Method and consists of 4 sonatas for oboe with a bass clef harmonization. The current edition, edited by Valarie Anderson, has corrected obvious note and articulation errors. Some missing dynamics and articulations have been added, but in so doing, striving to maintain the intent of the composer. Barret's "Four Sonatas" is offered as a separate publication for those not wanting the Complete Method.
