There is a myth that the swan, tuneless for its entire
life, will, just before dying, suddenly find its voice
and sing. The basset clarinet was presumed to have
sang its swan song sometime in the late eighteenth
century, having been replaced by more modern
instruments. This too, however, is a myth, as the
instrument has its champions even to this day, including
Peter Wright, for whom this work was written. The
present version of the work, adapted for basset horn,
was created to reflect the resurgence that that
instrument is also currently enjoying. The version for
basset clarinet or for clarinet in A is sold separately.
