There is a myth that the swan, tuneless for its entire
life, will, just before dying, suddenly find its voice and
sing. The basset clarinet was presumed to have sang its
swan song sometime in the late eighteenth century, having
been replaced by more modern instruments. This too,
however, is a myth, as the instrument has its champions
even to this day, including Peter Wright, for whom this
work was written. An alternate version has been adapted
for the modern clarinet in A, while retaining the spirit of
the original work. Parts for both basset clarinet and for
clarinet in A are included in this set. An additional
version for basset horn is sold separately.
