Nigun and Fugue was commissioned for the Inaugural
Buffet Crampon International Summer Clarinet Academy in
2007 and premiered by the academy faculty. A nigun is a
wordless prayer, often improvised by a rabbi with the
congregation joining in as he repeats the melody. In
this piece, the heterophonic texture that results from
the gradual joining of all of the voices in a
near-unison is contrasted with a five voice fugue that
follows.
Instrumentation: E-flat Clarinet, B-flat Clarinet,
A Clarinet 1-2, and Bass Clarinet.
