Rialto Ripples Rag was composed by George Gershwin and
Will Donaldson. It is Gershwin's first published
instrumental and his only piano rag. Already a successful
composer, Will Donaldson befriended George Gershwin when
Gershwin was a teen-age song plugger and an aspiring but
unpublished composer for Remick Music Publishers. He
apparently assisted Gershwin in getting Remick to publish
this piano rag, but it is not known whether he actually
contributed to the composition or simply loaned his name to
get the work published. Rialto Ripples was first made
into a piano roll in 1916, then published in 1917.
This arrangement for clarinet choir is by James Mack. The
instrumentation is E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet 1-3,
alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and contra clarinet.
Alternate (optional) parts have been included for Alto
Clarinet (Clarinet 4 or Basset Horn), and E-flat
contra-alto clarinet in place of the B-flat contrabass
clarinet.
