David DeBoor Canfield's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano was composed in 2018 for Ronald Caravan. The work is "polystylistic" and includes 4 movements, each of which has its own character. The first is a spiky movement with many changes of meter. The second, in a slow tempo, has the greatest use of quarter tones and multiphonics in the sonata. The third movement comprises a whirlwind scherzo which flits in and out of tonality. The final movement is divided into nine short sections and include various styllistic shifts ranging from quasi-ragtime to subdued freely tonal sections. The Sonata was premiered by Ronald Caravan along with pianist Sar-Shalom Strong on March 20, 2019 and subsequently recorded by them.
An important contribution to the repertoire, this sonata showcases the versatility of the clarinet using both traditional and extended techniques. The total duration is approximately 17.5 minutes.
