Amancio Jacinto Alcorta (1805-1862) was an Argentine
composer, policy maker and politician. This new edition
of his "Gran Fantasia" is edited by Paula Gudmundson.
Alcorta's compositions for flute are not dated but they
were among the first compositions for chamber ensemble
that he wrote. From the works published in 1869, only
the compositions for flute and piano follow European
forms used during the Romantic period. The "Gran Fantasia" is a theme and variations structure with an
introduction and a final vivace section in addition to
the main theme and three variations. It includes simple
melodies but the texture is more complex and full. The
decision to write a technical challenge for the flute
may have been due to the visits of many flute virtuosos
during this period such as Cambeses and Reichert.
Duration approximately 8.5 minutes.
