"Pulse" and "Drone" are the unifying features of virtually all musics throughout time and place. This work for string quartet, by Paul Richards, gradually unfolds different beat subdivisions (pulses) and tonal centers (drones) in a rhythmic arch form, followed by a sustained chorale-coda with very little sense of pulse. Pulse and Drone was the winner of the 2000 New Music for Sligo/Irish Music Rights Organization International Composition Competition.
