David DeBoor Canfield's New Hungarian Dances after Brahms was commissioned by the members of Signum Quartet (Germany). This suite is the 19th in Canfield's ongoing series of “After” works, or works written in the style and spirit of older composers who never wrote for certain instruments. The music incorporates melodies, harmonies, sudden changes of tempo, and juxtaposition of major modes with their parallel minor ones, all modeled on the 21 famous examples of the Hungarian Dances by Brahms. A few turns of phrase in this new work may also be reminiscent of Liszt and other contemporaries of Brahms who wrote in the Hungarian style. Canfield did not attempt to suppress completely his own artistic voice, however, and also sought to create variety between these seven new pieces.
Duration approximately 17 minutes. Score and parts included in the set.
