On August 26, 2024, the music world lost one of its icons in the person of Dr. Eugene Rousseau. More than that, however, countless individuals lost a colleague, friend, and mentor, a true artist who almost single-handedly expanded the renown of and repertory for the saxophone.
The Élégie is somber in tone as an expression of the sadness felt by all those who knew and loved this master. At the mid-point of this section, the expression of grief is racheted up to an emotional peak before it settles back into the previous mood. Immediately following is the Joie de vivre that attempts to depict the artist’s productive life in representation of his gifts as performer, teacher, educator, designer, and promoter of his beloved instrument.
The music was composed in 2025 especially for the "Celebration of Life" event held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in memory of Eugene Rousseau, It was premiered by saxophonist (and former Rousseau pupil) Kenneth Tse and his wife, pianist Casey Dierlam Tse. Total duration approximately 6.5 minutes.
