Night Swimming, a poem by Mary Grimm, was selected as
the text because it is so full of visual imagery and
conjures up feelings of tranquility and mystery without
ever becoming self-absorbed. The composer has
represented the smoothness of the water at night with a
simple, languid rocking motif. As the poem and the song
progress, the water ripples more and more quickly and
finally is agitated into a froth of activity by the
piano's rapid, alternating arpeggiated clusters and the
trills of the English horn's obbligato.
The set includes a piano-score, voice-score, and EH
part. Duration: approx. 6.5 minutes.
