Oboe Alone was composed at the request of Jan Eberle during the spring of 2007. Its premiere took place in June 2007 at the International Double Reed Society Conference held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY.
In preparing to write the piece, the composer thought a great deal about the performance situation of an oboe by itself on a stage, speaking from aloneness to an audience, a single voice apart from those hearing it. The music is set out in a simple ABA design, the outer sections pensive, lyric, generally slow and rather solemn, the middle section relentless, assertive, fast, ecstatic at its midpoint and generally full of energy. The resulting piece is both atmospheric and expressive in ways suggested by its title.
Oboe Alone has been recorded by Jan Eberle on Centaur (CRC 2962).
