According to the Zimmerman catalog of Purcell's works,
this composition was written in 1680 when Purcell
(1659-1695) was 21 years old. It was an instrumental
work for a family of viols and represents the Baroque
contrapuntal tradition and fascination with
compositional devices, in this instance a single pitch
that is sustained in one voice throughout the piece.
This music has been arranged for clarinet choir by James
Mack. It is scored for B-flat
clarinets 1-3, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and
contrabass clarinet. Alternate (optional) parts for this
clarinet choir arrangement have been included for Alto
Clarinet (Clarinet 4 or Basset Horn), and E-flat
contra-alto clarinet in place of the B-flat contrabass
clarinet. Duration approx. 3 minutes
