This work for violin and piano is a "protest" composition, akin to the War Requiem of Benjamin Britten. While Britten was protesting war, David DeBoor Canfield in the present work protests the practice of abortion that is prevalent in most societies around the globe. Initially written in 1987, Canfield rewrote it rather extensively early in 2010. The work in its present form is one of the most modernistic pieces in Canfield's canon, utilizing as it does numerous special effects — inside the piano techniques, quarter tones in the violin, and a special effect on the violin produced by rapidly sliding successive fingers over the same harmonic.

The 3 movements portray a woman wrestling with her feelings upon her discovery of her pregnancy under adverse circumstances, the decision to have an abortion, and the feelings of remorse. The total duration is approx. 16 minutes.

Sighs and Sorrows has been recorded by violinist Rachel Patrick and pianist Benjamin Boren on Enharmonic Records ENCD10-018.
