Widmung (translated as "Dedication" in English) was composed by Robert Schumann in 1840, and was part of a larger set of Lieder named Myrthen, Op. 25. This work was written as a gift that Schumann presented to his bride Clara Wieck on their wedding day. The text was provided by Friedrich Ruckert, a notable German poet and intellectual. While the English horn does not speak words, it can indeed “sing” the very expressive melody.

Schumann’s composition has been further adapted by a variety of musicians, most notably Franz Liszt. In typical Liszt-ian fashion, Schumann’s original was lengthened and made considerably more virtuosic. Dave Camwell's edition for English horn and piano follows Liszt’s conception, with the original vocal part being modified with fast runs and a variety of ornaments. These have been done in a way that retains the simple beauty of the melody, but also provides the soloist an opportunity for dazzlement. Duration: approx. 2 minutes
