Robert Schumann’s Three Romances were originally composed for oboe and piano in 1849. The Romances are not extroverted virtuoso works, but rather quite gentle, wistful, and emotional pieces of music that contain many opportunities for graceful and nuanced performance. In this edition, Dave Camwell's purpose was to adapt the music for two soloists (and piano) in a way that kept the original line always paramount, but divided so as to allow for less fatigue. However, in the first movement, the first solo part is actually exactly the same as the original, with the second part only providing additional harmonic and lyrical support and interest. In movements two and three, the solo line is much more evenly divided, and when one is not playing the original melodic line, they are either resting or providing added harmonic content in a deliberately Schumann-esque style. The three movements have a total timing of approximately 11.5 minutes.
