Niccolo Paganini is perhaps best known for his 24 Capricci for solo violin. Written between 1802 and 1817, they were first published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1854. Many considered them too hard to play until Paganini himself proved them wrong. Among violinists the 24 Capricci, frequently appearing as encore pieces, are used as etudes to hone their skills and show off their musical prowess. Once the technical challenges are met, the rich colors and expressive qualities come through.
The popularity of the Capricci has led to them being adapted for various instruments. In this edition, Romanian oboist Christian Tuns has adapted them for the oboe. The 24 capricci are divided into 2 volumes, with 12 capricci in each. This web page offers vol. 2 which includes the famous Capriccio #24. See also volume 1 (JP1103)
